I have to admit that I no longer play scary games before heading to bed. It’s unfair to my wife, who has to put up with the shrieking nightmares they provoke in me, and also live with the knowledge that her husband’s a total wimp.
It was a tough habit to break. If you get a thrill from thinking about things that go bump in the night, there are few experiences that tap that better than turning out the lights and decapitating zombies from the comfort of your couch.
So, for those of you with the freedom to stay up late playing video games (savor this time, folks) or who have yet to be shamed into PG-only fare for the sake of your family, my friend and colleague Jeff Bakalar has gathered together five of the spookiest cross-platform games of the past year.
Mind you, we weren’t going for the most gruesome games, or explicit. In the spirit of Halloween, we really tried to hold tight to the idea of spookiness –that specific moody, blood-pressure raising feeling that makes you check the locks in your house twice. We also had to boot a few console-exclusive games for the sake of keeping this list cross-platform.
So, without further ado, enjoy our latest Top 5 video, and have a great Halloween.
